Since then, the Gold Nugget has often been referred to as the Gold Kangaroo. The Australian Gold Kangaroo is one of the few legal tender gold coins worldwide that features a new deisgn every year.

The obverse of the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse portrays a kangaroo with a joey in its pouch, set against a styalized background of the Southern Cross constellation. Including the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO’, the reverse incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark as well as the coin’s weight, purity and 2009 year-date.
